Limitations of AI models
If your instructor does authorize the use of an AI writing tool for class assignments, be aware of the following limitations to AI models:
- Since AI writing models may not have access to the most current data available, information provided by generative AI could be wrong, out-of-date, biased or nonsensical.
- Generative AI tools currently do not have the capability to cite outside sources and create bibliographies. Citations included by these tools may be fake, so you’ll need to carefully verify any citations generated by an AI tool.
For example:
When asked the question “Who is the current monarch of the United Kingdom?” in April 2023, the generative AI tool ChatGTP replied:
“As of my knowledge cutoff of September 2021, the current monarch of the United Kingdom is Queen Elizabeth II. However, please note that as a language model, I do not have access to real-time information and my responses are limited to my knowledge cutoff date.”
With guidance from your instructor, generative AI can be used as a valuable learning tool. Before you begin using any AI tools for class assignments make sure you understand your instructor’s policies and expectations.
